I know, a second blog this week!  This is timely, so I had to get it to you, and I know some of you guys will jump right on this plan, whether it’s the Maine Boatbuilders Show, or Bath Blarney Days, OR BOTH!

Guys, we at Brewster House are acutely aware of the ladies penchant for shopping in Freeport, and your disinterest in same, so we will be making sure that you know about all the amazing “guy stuff” for you to get excited about hereabouts!  More on these opportunities in the upcoming months!
One prime example of VERY COOL MEN THINGS to do here soon is the annual Maine Boatbuilders Show at the Portland Company Complex, 58 Fore St., Portland.  The show will be on March 14th, 15th & 16th.  This show is the amazing gathering of Maine builders of wooden, fiberglass and metal boats, from canoes to 100’ yachts.  It’s where you get to see, touch, feel, explore  and consider your ultimate dream fishing, sailing, cruising, or just plain farting around boat, where art meets possibility and the classic lines of gorgeous downeast hulls thrill the discerning boaters eye.  We’re only 15 minutes north of Portland!  What could be better than that on an otherwise cold, dreary than indulging your fantasies?  I’ll be there!!  Check it out!    http://www.portlandcompany.com/boatShow/

As an added kiss that weekend, my favorite local museum, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, will be offering an evening entitled “VOICES OF THE SEA.”  The third annual event will feature professional fishermen, fisherwomen and mariners speaking about their lives and challenges on the Atlantic.  In Bath, it will take place on Friday evening, 3/14 at the Museum in concert with the celebration of Bath Blarney Days, a celebration of all things Irish.  On Saturday, another version will be offered in Portland, adjacent to the Boatbuilders show, with folksinger Gordon Bok and other Maine marine artists and poets on the evening following the show.  Learn more at http://mainemaritimemuseum.org/events/voices-sea/!

What better base for your comfort and weekend away than Brewster House?  We’d love to share the show and weekend with you, and hey, your Lady will want a say in your boat choice!  In March and April, we offer our Spring Serenity Special, which offers 3 nights for the price of two.  Come and visit and book your favorite room athttp://www.brewsterhouse.com!  You’ll die for Mary’s breakfast and afternoon cookies!  We just finished redoing the Cape Elizabeth and Cape Neddick rooms, check them out (new photos not on the web yet)!

AHHHHHH, FEBRUARY!!

February 8, 2014 by Scott Gile

AHHH, FEBRUARY!!
Yup, we’re about ½ way through one real “old school” Maine winter!  Seems like we’re back in the snow cycle too!  My son (a school-teacher) skillfully predicted a “snow day” on Wednesday, and we thoroughly enjoyed a boot high “powda pig” day in the freshies!!  Nothing like skiing while snowing with almost no other skiers present!! Spent several awesome runs on Rogue Angel (Sunday River) in a long line of powder pillows.  Here’s Pat’s face to prove it!  Breathe Pat, breathe!

Mary’s been intensely sewing new drapes, finding new furniture pieces, painting, buying new linens, and pillows.  She just finished the Cape Elizabeth Room today (minus graphic arts)! Brewster House recently acquired a lot of Real Maine artwork and photos, mat cutting equipment, etc., and are working on replacing what’s on many walls.

I recently drove with my son down to Memphis to keep him company on the way to learning to be a USAF pilot in Mississippi.  Nice time with a very special young man!  We will sorely miss him!  Do you know what time 1P:G8 is?  Lesson to inn-keeper here!

We just hosted “Reconnect Weekend” #2.  If you consider the picture left, it’s pretty clear how much of a weekend long blast you and yours could be having for a ridiculous price!  What a way to turn an otherwise boring, cold weekend into a fabulous reunion, filled with laughs, memories and great food!

Have an idea?  Call us!
Up for a REAL MAINE pahty?  Stay with us, and ride to Camden for the Annual World Toboggan Championship at the Camden Snow Bowl!  http://winter.camdensnowbowl.com/24th-annual-us-national-toboggan-championships.  Here’s the picture – 400’ wooden chute, leads you out onto a frozen pond to run off steam, and let’s not forget the Mardi Gras style costumes and flowing beverages!!!  Check out the video  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWbITSiFcRY
Take advantage of our generosity for Valentines Day weekend!  We have a few precious rooms left and enjoy out February is for Romance special, which includes a bottle of bubbly, flowers and chocolates.  For the adventurous, throw in a snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or dog sled mushing adventure with the LL Bean Discovery Center http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/1000001692
“Flavors of Freeport” is coming up on Feb. 21st, and the tickets sell out, so don’t hesitate if you don’t want to miss out on the Chef’s Signature Series and the Ice Bar!!  All the best joints in town will be represented!  What else do you have to do that weekend??  Here’s the link http://www.freeportusa.com/flavorsoffreeport/.

If you were a Brewster House Newsletter subscriber, you might have read some of this, but you would’ve really loved eating the Baked Stuffed Lobstas from my magic little English Grandmoter!  Not too late to sign up!

Christmas 2013 Blog
Ah, Wow and Thank God for another Christmas!  I saw a very melancholy Facebook post from an old friend who unintentionally reminded me how lucky the Giles are, and after our wonderful family, that would include owning Brewster House and having the privilege of knowing all of you!
What has been exciting and powerful is the early winter, which I understand is not unique to Maine!    We got about 20” of snow here between last Sunday and Tuesday, and Tuesday AM was -3 degrees Fahrenheit!!  I’ve been skiing a couple of times already, and the last time was on 14” of new natural snow – VERY NICE!  There were some great photo ops, but to be honest, I just couldn’t face removing my fingers from my mittens long enough to take a picture, sorry!
Brewster House looked gorgeous all dressed up in snow and lights, and our guests have really enjoyed hanging by the fireplace in the living room.  Seeing our guests relaxing there truly makes us smile, as the point of refurnishing it was to make the salon a place you would feel at home in….having a glass of wine, reading the paper, playing cards with friends, NICE!!!
Poor Buddy’s been not feeling well for a month, with digestive/ eating problems.  Scary to watch your dog lose ¼ of his weight in a couple of weeks!  He seems to be coming around, we’re working at it as we really do love our dog!  As you can see, he’s still dashing in his Christmas coat, Red Sox leash & collar!

Here’s the link for the New Years events in Freeport, including Fireworks at 6PM!  http://www.freeportusa.com/events/l-l-bean-northern-lights-celebration-new-years-eve-celebration/
Don’t for get  your outdoor winter options here that I alluded to in my Early Wintah Blog for the January Winter Carnival Weekend & Flavors of Freeport in February.  Also, LL Bean offers regular “learn to” cross country ski, and snowshoe adventures at their Outdoor Discovery School http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/1000001692.  This Winter is certainly shaping up to be a fine one for playing in the snow, and believe it or not, we’re getting a little busy in January!!
Scott & Ruth recognized their frequent guests with a discount.  We think that’s the right thing to do, but where we don’t necessarily know you all as well, will formalize a program so when you book, we will automatically know you as “Friends of Brewster!”  So, visit us four times, and from the fifth visit on, we will “take special care of you!”  Of course, this discount will be outside of special discount promtions such as our “Winter Wonderland” promotion for January.
Lastly, if you’re not on the Newsletter list, you might’ve missed my mention of our success and interest in Reconnect Weekends.  We can offer you a fabulous price if you can commit to renting all 7 rooms from us on any 2 day weekend that’s available in January, March, April or May.   We need a leader of a group to commit to a full weekend for 7 rooms, & we’ll ask for a 50% deposit up front.  In return, you own Brewster House for a weekend for just over 50% of the per room rack rates!!  Of course, we’ll serve the same elegant breakfasts, and can offer additional wine, or breakfast cocktails and our dining and living rooms for your pleasure.  Call for details!!
Thanks for being so kind and forgiving in our first half year of learning to be inn-keepers, and Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!!

BAH-GUN WEEKEND & HAPPI NEW YEAH’S!!

BAH-GUN WEEKEND
Friends of Brewster, our suggestion is to save your Christmas money (and any gifts you can put off) and come to Freeport for the weekend after  Christmas to take advantage of all the over-stocking mistakes the retailers represented here made!!  Not only do you get to take advantage of LL Bean & neighbors, but Brewster House has our own BAH-GUN for you!!
Arrive on Thursday 12/26, or Friday 12/27 and we’ll offer you 3 days here for the price of just 2!  Not only that, we’ll throw in your choice of a Mimosa or Proscecco cocktail with your breakfast on Sunday ON US!!  We’ll even handle the recycling from all of your buying victories, and provide you with a 50 gallon bag for your gifts (like Santa’s, but polyethylene) and help you wrestle that beast to your car!
HAPPI NEW YEAHS -2014!!
Hey, the Wednesday Christmas/ New Yeahs weekday makes this Holiday a bit challenging for we celebrants.  If you are among the fortunate (or committed to partying) who will go away, consider coming to Brewster House on Tuesday, 12/31!  We have OUTSTANDING DINING OPTIONS, both here and in Portland!!  LL Bean is sponsoring fireworks on New Year’s Eve.  See this link for all of the WILD goings on in Portland!  http://www.newyearsportlandmaine.com.  We’ll not only welcome you with a bottle of sparkly, but will help with “hair of the dog” at Mary’s always elegant breakfast with your choice of a mimosa or Prosecco cocktail.

And as a tease, this was the “fruit” offering w/ breakfast a few days ago……Mary called this vanilla pannacotta w/ strawberries.  Seems to me something like “life-altering creamy slathering love-bomb of strawberries” might be more accurately descriptive!!

Mary’s Magic Asparagus Cheddar Fritatta

October 21, 2013 by Scott Gile

MARY’S MAGIC ASPARAGUS CHEDDAR FRITATTA

I keep getting asked, not only how I can be so attractive in the morning, but also for my recipes.  Well, I’ve had to give Mary a little credit lately, so we’ll say this unbelieveably creamy, melt-in-your -mouth savory dish was hers……  You’ll remember it if you’ve eaten it!!

INGREDIENTS;

6 tablespoons of unsalted butter, divided
1 cup of chopped fresh asparagus, chopped into ½” pieces
            2 shallots, chopped
8 extra large eggs, or 10 large eggs
            1.5 cups of cottage cheese
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, freshly grated
½ cup jarlsberg cheese, fresh grated
            ½ tsp kosher salt
            ½ tsp black pepper
1 tbsp fresh thyme
1/3 cup flour
¾ tsp baking powder

THE COOKING;

            Preheat oven to 350

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in 10” oven proof skillet
Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter in a dish in the microwave
In the skillet, sauté the chopped asparagus & shallots until tender, turn off heat
Meanwhile, whisk eggs, 4 tablespoons of melted butter, salt, pepper & thyme
            Stir in cheeses
Sprinkle in flour and baking powder, fold into egg mixture
Pour egg mixture into skillet.  Bake frittata until it is browned & puffed up…
            About 45 – 50 minutes.
Insert knife into center, should come out clean when dish is ready!
SERVES 8!!  Bon appetite!!
