FREEPORT TRAVEL LINKS BLOG
Lots of GREAT NEWS hereabouts to enhance your Brewster House ease of travel experiences via Freeport!!
Local Car Rentals
First of all, I mentioned a few blogs ago (“Downeaster”) that I thought there might be a direct rental car opportunity from Brewster House and I’ve finally made that link.  Spoke with the good folks at Enterprise Rent A Car in Brunswick (several miles north of here) and confirmed my suspicion that they will actually come here and pick you up to bring you to your Enterprise rental car……..that should make the “Downeaster” Amtrak train from Boston or Portland an option that is much more practical for a longer stay here out of Brewster House.  Just call us to meet you at the Station, we’ll bring you to Brewster House with your bags,  then have Enterprise bring you to your car!!  Of course, they offer a choice of sizes, types and colors, so that should help with the traffic blues!  You can reach them at 207-725-1344 to make your vacation plan!!  Tell them the Brewster House sent you!  We still have some rooms in which to host you in September and October!!

Portland – Nova Scotia Ferry Service
As a big fan of moto-touring, I’ve had some wonderful experiences in Atlantic Canada, and look forward to more!  Up until 2009, there were convenient ferry options to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from both Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine.  With the decline in folk’s income, post recession, in 2009 the ferry operation became untenable economically.  From that time forward, to go to Nova Scotia the only option has been to either drive all the way through New Brunswick (a whole day), or to take the ferry from St. John, New Brunswick (from where you’re already ½ way there).
Recently, the government of Nova Scotia put up $21,000,000 inviting RFP’s from interested ferry services for 7 years of subsidy to get the business re-started.  Today, the Portland Herald Press announced that they’ve accepted the proposal of a Maine based company to resume service in 2014.  This is the ship they will use.
The ship will hold 1,215 passengers and is equipped with 162 cabins and 2 restaurants, so it doesn’t appear to be the high speed option the “Scotia Cat” was, but it sounds like it might be both less expensive and a more viable business model.
So, for all you folks that have been hoping to enjoy Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island or Prince Edward Island, you’ll be thrilled to have this adventurous option again!  It’s on my motorcycle touring list!!  Start and end your boat trip from Mary’s incredible breakfast at Brewster House (15-20 minutes from the pier in Portland), we can’t wait to hear about your trip!!
