Christmas 2013 Blog
Ah, Wow and Thank God for another Christmas!  I saw a very melancholy Facebook post from an old friend who unintentionally reminded me how lucky the Giles are, and after our wonderful family, that would include owning Brewster House and having the privilege of knowing all of you!
What has been exciting and powerful is the early winter, which I understand is not unique to Maine!    We got about 20” of snow here between last Sunday and Tuesday, and Tuesday AM was -3 degrees Fahrenheit!!  I’ve been skiing a couple of times already, and the last time was on 14” of new natural snow – VERY NICE!  There were some great photo ops, but to be honest, I just couldn’t face removing my fingers from my mittens long enough to take a picture, sorry!
Brewster House looked gorgeous all dressed up in snow and lights, and our guests have really enjoyed hanging by the fireplace in the living room.  Seeing our guests relaxing there truly makes us smile, as the point of refurnishing it was to make the salon a place you would feel at home in….having a glass of wine, reading the paper, playing cards with friends, NICE!!!
Poor Buddy’s been not feeling well for a month, with digestive/ eating problems.  Scary to watch your dog lose ¼ of his weight in a couple of weeks!  He seems to be coming around, we’re working at it as we really do love our dog!  As you can see, he’s still dashing in his Christmas coat, Red Sox leash & collar!

Here’s the link for the New Years events in Freeport, including Fireworks at 6PM!  http://www.freeportusa.com/events
Don’t for get  your outdoor winter options here that I alluded to in my Early Wintah Blog for the January Winter Carnival Weekend & Flavors of Freeport in February.  Also, LL Bean offers regular “learn to” cross country ski, and snowshoe adventures at their Outdoor Discovery School http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/1000001692.  This Winter is certainly shaping up to be a fine one for playing in the snow, and believe it or not, we’re getting a little busy in January!!
Scott & Ruth recognized their frequent guests with a discount.  We think that’s the right thing to do, but where we don’t necessarily know you all as well, will formalize a program so when you book, we will automatically know you as “Friends of Brewster!”  So, visit us four times, and from the fifth visit on, we will “take special care of you!”  Of course, this discount will be outside of special discount promtions such as our “Winter Wonderland” promotion for January.
Lastly, if you’re not on the Newsletter list, you might’ve missed my mention of our success and interest in Reconnect Weekends.  We can offer you a fabulous price if you can commit to renting all 7 rooms from us on any 2 day weekend that’s available in January, March, April or May.   We need a leader of a group to commit to a full weekend for 7 rooms, & we’ll ask for a 50% deposit up front.  In return, you own Brewster House for a weekend for just over 50% of the per room rack rates!!  Of course, we’ll serve the same elegant breakfasts, and can offer additional wine, or breakfast cocktails and our dining and living rooms for your pleasure.  Call for details!!
Thanks for being so kind and forgiving in our first half year of learning to be inn-keepers, and Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!!

WINTAH’S ARRIVAL

WINTAH’S ARRIVAL BLOG
Today my Dad & I took a little men’s adventure to the Maine Maritime Museum, out to lunch and a Home Depot stop for building stuff.  Cold!  Must’ve been 17 or so Monday AM, still a little snow here and there, after the winter gales of the last 2 days.  Got the flipside Noreaster on the way for the day before Thanksgiving.  Laid in bed last Monday night, listening to the wind lifting the shingles.  Rained buckets Tuesday night through Wednesday, then the gift you see above!
I digress….so, Don (my Dad) and I spent several hours absorbing the amazing models, histories, painting and artifacts at this breathtaking Maine Maritime Museum in Bath.  One of my favorites was the model of the 360’ J. P. Morgan Jr. motor yacht that was built in 1930 at the Bath Iron Works.  It really is a stunning place to experience, and only 20 minutes from here!  It also has a fabulous store with all kinds of books, drawings, artwork, photos, souvenirs, crushed mussel shell coasters, etc.  We plan to replace a lot of the more uninteresting wall decorations here over the winter with Maine stuff.  We know you will enjoy the changes.
Ice boat

We’re also refurbishing several rooms in the inn this winter (when not skiing or entertaining you).  We’re also going to work on the Brewster House Good Times book this winter, so no matter how long you’re here, no matter what the weather is, no matter what you like to do, we’ll have an awesome “on the spot” resource!
LL Bean is whooping it up big for the Holidays!  Since they erected their enormous tree, every ½ hour on weekend evenings, they have an amazing coordinated music/ light show with their block-wide decorations!  Too bad you didn’t book earlier for Sparkle Weekend!
When you’re a downhill skier, one of the great features of being busy all summer and fall is quiet weekdays in the Winter to visit Sunday River (or “The Loaf”), just 65 miles from here.  This was taken a few days ago!  Ah, we love the corduroy!!!!
If your skiing ambitions are more the cross-country variety, sledding, dog-sledding, horse drawn sleigh rides or the snow-shoe touring sort, come up for the LL Bean Winter Carnival Weekend January 19th & 20th. Believe it or not, we STILL HAVE ROOMS!!  It will take place at the LL Bean Sports Center, near Wolf’s Neck, and advance registration is required, SO PLAN NOW!!
Finally, don’t forget Flavors of Freeport! This delicious event includes the Chef Signature Series, and Flavors Ice Bar,  a DJ, fire pit and luge to get you slipping and sliding into mid-winter on Friday, Feb. 21st.
We have shovels full of winter deals available for you!  See our website and latest newsletter for a summary and GET UP HEEAH!!

BAH-GUN WEEKEND
Friends of Brewster, our suggestion is to save your Christmas money (and any gifts you can put off) and come to Freeport for the weekend after  Christmas to take advantage of all the over-stocking mistakes the retailers represented here made!!  Not only do you get to take advantage of LL Bean & neighbors, but Brewster House has our own BAH-GUN for you!!
Arrive on Thursday 12/26, or Friday 12/27 and we’ll offer you 3 days here for the price of just 2!  Not only that, we’ll throw in your choice of a Mimosa or Proscecco cocktail with your breakfast on Sunday ON US!!  We’ll even handle the recycling from all of your buying victories, and provide you with a 50 gallon bag for your gifts (like Santa’s, but polyethylene) and help you wrestle that beast to your car!
HAPPI NEW YEAHS 2014!!
Hey, the Wednesday Christmas/ New Yeahs weekday makes this Holiday a bit challenging for we celebrants.  If you are among the fortunate (or committed to partying) who will go away, consider coming to Brewster House on Tuesday, 12/31!  We have OUTSTANDING DINING OPTIONS, both here and in Portland!!  LL Bean is sponsoring fireworks on New Year’s Eve.  See VisitPortland.com for all of the WILD goings on in Portland!  We’ll not only welcome you with a bottle of sparkly, but will help with “hair of the dog” at Mary’s always elegant breakfast with your choice of a mimosa or Prosecco cocktail.
And as a tease, this was the “fruit” offering w/ breakfast a few days ago……Mary called this vanilla pannacotta w/ strawberries.  Seems to me something like “life-altering creamy slathering love-bomb of strawberries” might be more accurately descriptive!!

SWEET SEPTEMBER FIRE
Fall in Maine….any New England native knows this is the finest time to be here!  Days tend to be cooler, sun bright, 100 mile visibility, air dry, bugs….largely dead, and we haven’t even gotten to the blazing yellow, oranges and reds of the maples, oaks and birches here!!  Brewster House is surrounded on all sides by Sugar, Norway and Black Maples.  In fact, most of Freeport is deciduous trees, so we are smack in the middle of blaze of Autumn color at Brewster House!

From Horses to Horsepower: Owls Head Transportation Museum

March 26, 2013 by Scott Gile

Every year we try to make it to Owls Head, Maine (about an hour north of Brewster House on US-1) to visit Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Why would we do that? How good can a transportation museum be in a sleepy coastal Maine town of about 1,600 souls? Wonder no further – it is that good!

Even the museum’s website may fool you – it has plenty of information, but it bears the look of a site that has gone through changes – and not all the changes made it to all the pages. Some parts look newer than others, but, in general, you wouldn’t accuse it of being a cutting-edge site. Do not let that fool you!

The collections at OHTM include aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, carriages, bicycles and engines. In addition, there are current exhibitions of MG’s (a dozen or more), microcars (you have to see them), and even a 1954 Chevrolet Corvette!

The collection of aircraft is exceptional, with examples of all sorts of pre-WW2 aircraft, including a full-size replica of the Wright brothers’ plane. All but that one can and do actually fly, using the adjacent airstrip.

The collection of antique automobiles is truly amazing. In addition to the MG’s, there are beautifully restored examples from Stanley, Cadillac, Mercedes, Oldsmobile, Ford, Rolls Royce, Packard, Pierce-Arrow, and more!

As if the exhibits and collections weren’t enough, there are special events almost every weekend, from the March 23 & 24 Midcoast Model Festival, the May 25 & 26 Owls Head Spring Antique Auto & Aeroplane Show, through the season-ending (though the museum remains open all year) Nov. 2 & 3 The Great Fall Auction & Flea Market.

Maybe you’d like to join us there…

If it’s Spring, Can Lobster be Far Away?

March 12, 2013 by Scott Gile

It’s March, and that means that Spring is almost here (and our Spring Serenity Special – 3 for 2 – IS here, but we digress!), and that means it won’t be long before Maine’s wonderful lobster shacks will begin to open their doors for the 2013 season!

Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster, Freeport, Maine

Most open in mid- to late-May, and remain open until mid- to late-October. Here in Freeport, our own Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster (pictured) opens May 1 and stays open until about mid-October each year.

Many of our guests make sure they stop at Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster at least once while they’re in town to enjoy the famous Freeport shopping. However, since most of our guests also visit many of the other coastal attractions, from beaches, state parks and lighthouses, to museums and botanical gardens, they like to know about the other lobster shacks throughout the areas where they are exploring.

For that purpose, we also created our Secret Lobster Shacks of Maine guide, with map and photos of some of our favorites. Wherever you are traveling in Maine, this guide will show you the nearest lobster shack!

It’s good eatin’!

Recipe: Early Morning Roasted New Potatoes

March 5, 2013 by Scott Gile

This wonderful, delicious, and easy side dish is a favorite at breakfast, or at any meal!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds new potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)
In a hot skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil. Stir in rosemary, salt and pepper. Coat potatoes evenly with the melted butter mixture.
Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on a baking pan.
Bake in preheated oven until potatoes are golden brown, approximately 20-25 minutes. Toss them occasionally to ensure that they brown on all sides. If you like a darker brown color, bake them a bit longer.

Servings: 4

It’s True! Spring is on its way!

February 26, 2013 by Scott Gile

Following on the heels of the whimsically-named nor’easter called Nemo, we had another storm about a week ago, and more snow just this past weekend. With more snow predicted tomorrow (Wednesday), you might find it hard to believe that we can see signs that Spring is on its way – but it is!

Despite the sudden flurry of snowstorms (sorry – couldn’t resist!), temperatures have been well above freezing in between, so each snow has nearly disappeared before the next one arrived. Even with snow in the current forecast, the temperatures are above freezing, so we don’t expect it to be around long!

And then, there is the true sign of Spring – March 1 marks the beginning of our annual Spring Serenity special at Brewster House Bed & Breakfast in Freeport Maine! This annual special has become extremely popular with our guests over the past several years.

Not only is the weather starting to improve (though there can often be nice conditions for a bit of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, etc. – and L.L. Bean’s courses to teach these and other skills continue into March) but the Freeport’s outlets and shops are clearing out their old merchandise to make way for the new – and that means SALES!

Check out our availability calendar, and book your visit to get 3 nights for the price of 2, March 1 – May 8, 2013! All the Brewster House goodness, with an extra day free! Any room, any day, but subject to availability.
