BAH-GUN WEEKEND
Friends of Brewster, our suggestion is to save your Christmas money (and any gifts you can put off) and come to Freeport for the weekend after  Christmas to take advantage of all the over-stocking mistakes the retailers represented here made!!  Not only do you get to take advantage of LL Bean & neighbors, but Brewster House has our own BAH-GUN for you!!
Arrive on Thursday 12/26, or Friday 12/27 and we’ll offer you 3 days here for the price of just 2!  Not only that, we’ll throw in your choice of a Mimosa or Proscecco cocktail with your breakfast on Sunday ON US!!  We’ll even handle the recycling from all of your buying victories, and provide you with a 50 gallon bag for your gifts (like Santa’s, but polyethylene) and help you wrestle that beast to your car!
HAPPI NEW YEAHS -2014!!
Hey, the Wednesday Christmas/ New Yeahs weekday makes this Holiday a bit challenging for we celebrants.  If you are among the fortunate (or committed to partying) who will go away, consider coming to Brewster House on Tuesday, 12/31!  We have OUTSTANDING DINING OPTIONS, both here and in Portland!!  LL Bean is sponsoring fireworks on New Year’s Eve.  See this link for all of the WILD goings on in Portland!  http://www.newyearsportlandmaine.com.  We’ll not only welcome you with a bottle of sparkly, but will help with “hair of the dog” at Mary’s always elegant breakfast with your choice of a mimosa or Prosecco cocktail.

And as a tease, this was the “fruit” offering w/ breakfast a few days ago……Mary called this vanilla pannacotta w/ strawberries.  Seems to me something like “life-altering creamy slathering love-bomb of strawberries” might be more accurately descriptive!!

From Horses to Horsepower: Owls Head Transportation Museum

March 26, 2013 by Scott Gile

Every year we try to make it to Owls Head, Maine (about an hour north of Brewster House on US-1) to visit Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Why would we do that? How good can a transportation museum be in a sleepy coastal Maine town of about 1,600 souls? Wonder no further - it is that good!

Even the museum’s website may fool you – it has plenty of information, but it bears the look of a site that has gone through changes – and not all the changes made it to all the pages. Some parts look newer than others, but, in general, you wouldn’t accuse it of being a cutting-edge site. Do not let that fool you!

The collections at OHTM include aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, carriages, bicycles and engines. In addition, there are current exhibitions of MG’s (a dozen or more), microcars (you have to see them), and even a 1954 Chevrolet Corvette!

The collection of aircraft is exceptional, with examples of all sorts of pre-WW2 aircraft, including a full-size replica of the Wright brothers’ plane. All but that one can and do actually fly, using the adjacent airstrip.

The collection of antique automobiles is truly amazing. In addition to the MG’s, there are beautifully restored examples from Stanley, Cadillac, Mercedes, Oldsmobile, Ford, Rolls Royce, Packard, Pierce-Arrow, and more!

As if the exhibits and collections weren’t enough, there are special events almost every weekend, from the March 23 & 24 Midcoast Model Festival, the May 25 & 26 Owls Head Spring Antique Auto & Aeroplane Show, through the season-ending (though the museum remains open all year) Nov. 2 & 3 The Great Fall Auction & Flea Market.

Maybe you’d like to join us there…

If it’s Spring, Can Lobster be Far Away?

March 12, 2013 by Scott Gile

It’s March, and that means that Spring is almost here (and our Spring Serenity Special – 3 for 2 – IS here, but we digress!), and that means it won’t be long before Maine’s wonderful lobster shacks will begin to open their doors for the 2013 season!

Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster, Freeport, Maine

Most open in mid- to late-May, and remain open until mid- to late-October. Here in Freeport, our own Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster (pictured) opens May 1 and stays open until about mid-October each year.

Many of our guests make sure they stop at Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster at least once while they’re in town to enjoy the famous Freeport shopping. However, since most of our guests also visit many of the other coastal attractions, from beaches, state parks and lighthouses, to museums and botanical gardens, they like to know about the other lobster shacks throughout the areas where they are exploring.

For that purpose, we also created our Secret Lobster Shacks of Maine guide, with map and photos of some of our favorites. Wherever you are traveling in Maine, this guide will show you the nearest lobster shack!

It’s good eatin’!

Recipe: Early Morning Roasted New Potatoes

March 5, 2013 by Scott Gile

This wonderful, delicious, and easy side dish is a favorite at breakfast, or at any meal!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds new potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)
In a hot skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil. Stir in rosemary, salt and pepper. Coat potatoes evenly with the melted butter mixture.
Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on a baking pan.
Bake in preheated oven until potatoes are golden brown, approximately 20-25 minutes. Toss them occasionally to ensure that they brown on all sides. If you like a darker brown color, bake them a bit longer.

Servings: 4

It’s True! Spring is on its way!

February 26, 2013 by Scott Gile

Following on the heels of the whimsically-named nor’easter called Nemo, we had another storm about a week ago, and more snow just this past weekend. With more snow predicted tomorrow (Wednesday), you might find it hard to believe that we can see signs that Spring is on its way – but it is!

Despite the sudden flurry of snowstorms (sorry – couldn’t resist!), temperatures have been well above freezing in between, so each snow has nearly disappeared before the next one arrived. Even with snow in the current forecast, the temperatures are above freezing, so we don’t expect it to be around long!

And then, there is the true sign of Spring – March 1 marks the beginning of our annual Spring Serenity special at Brewster House Bed & Breakfast in Freeport Maine! This annual special has become extremely popular with our guests over the past several years.

Not only is the weather starting to improve (though there can often be nice conditions for a bit of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, etc. – and L.L. Bean’s courses to teach these and other skills continue into March) but the Freeport’s outlets and shops are clearing out their old merchandise to make way for the new – and that means SALES!

Check out our availability calendar, and book your visit to get 3 nights for the price of 2, March 1 – May 8, 2013! All the Brewster House goodness, with an extra day free! Any room, any day, but subject to availability.

After the storm…

February 12, 2013 by Scott Gile

The winter storm of “potentially historic” proportion (and unofficially given the whimsical name “Nemo” by the Weather Channel) is behind us, leaving almost two feet of white powder in its wake.

We heard the 40-50 mph wind gusts all through Friday night, and found they had strewn snowdrifts erratically through the yard. One side of our house was nearly bare of snow – with a clear view of the grass, while the driveway had drifts approaching four feet, and nearly five feet in one place.

We spend much of Saturday running the snowblower to clear the driveway for our guests, most of whom enjoyed huddling by the fireplaces in the cold temperatures. We were very grateful not to have lost power during the storm!

Sunday, after seeing off the last of the guests, we took a drive around the area and enjoyed taking photos of the fresh, clean snow.We also ventured down to the South Freeport pier to get the sunset photo at the top of this post!

Hope to see you soon, to get your own photos of Freeport!

Discovering the Outdoors … in Winter!

January 29, 2013 by Scott Gile

Our guests at Brewster House Bed & Breakfast are quite familiar with L.L. Bean’s 5 stores and world headquarters in Freeport Maine. Many even enjoy the L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools during the Spring and Summer months (in the fall, they’re usually too busy looking at our fall foliage!).

But did you know that the Outdoor Discovery Schools in Freeport run in the winter, too? No, not for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, shooting clays, etc. But for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing!

What? You’ve never tried these great winter activities? Well, now is your chance! The Outdoor Discovery School classes in Freeport run through March 10, conditions permitting (only on weekends, but weekdays, too, from February 18-22). You can snowshoe in the mornings and cross-country ski in the afternoons. They are priced at $20 per person per class, and all equipment is provided!

What a deal! Check it out at the Outdoor Discovery School counter inside the Flagship Store, at the door by the boot!

We got snowshoes not long after we came to Brewster House, and while the photo above is not from an L.L. Bean course, it shows Ruth snowshoeing in nearby Wolfe Neck Woods State Park, along the Casco Bay.
