Morning Glorious – the last fling of autumn

October 30, 2010 by Scott Gile

Every year our red maple across the driveway is the last to turn colors (it began only a couple of days ago), and one of the last to drop its leaves (should be good for another week or so, depending on wind, rain, etc.).

This morning, with the early morning sun coming up on it, the leaves seemed to glow a deep red and orange. What a beauty that tree is!

It is always with a tinge of sadness that we see it turn colors, however, as that is also the sure sign that autumn is nearly over, and winter will soon be here. Of course, the prospect of winter brings its own pleasures!

First, we have Sparkle Weekend, the first weekend in December, with parade, festival, L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights, and more! Then there is all of the traditional Christmas shopping and events, followed by New Year’s Eve and the huge celebration to ring in the new year. And then we start all over again, with January and snow and all that can be done with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more!

All that, from one little tree!

Sparkle With Us In Freeport, December 2009

September 15, 2009 by Scott Gile

Brewster House B&B with Christmas lightsIt seems too early in the year to be thinking about Christmas, but we’re well into September, and for those making plans for early December, it is already time to begin thinking about Freeport’s 16th annual Sparkle Weekend.

This year Sparkle is December 4, 5 and 6. Typically the weekend includes L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights celebration nightly (from November 20 – January 1), horsedrawn wagon rides, hot cocoa, an open house and tour of Freeport’s historic bed and breakfast inns, a talking Christmas tree, a parade (with Santa arriving in a lobster boat!), visits with Santa, Freeport Community Players’ Old Time Radio Show, a Jingle Bell fun run, a craft fair, a tuba concert, and more!

In 2008 L.L. Bean displayed the largest Christmas tree east of the Mississippi River, lit with energy-efficient LED lights, and provided entertaining ice carving demonstrations, as well as other instruction and demonstrations around the tree.

All this is in addition to the nearly 200 shops and restaurants in Freeport, a number of which will be offering special bargains and packages for the occasion.

Many guests book rooms for Sparkle Weekend for the next year as they depart from the previous year, so rooms can be in short supply. Be sure to plan early, to be sure your room is available.

Maine events – Things are happening in Maine

July 4 in Freeport Maine
We received an email from L.L. Bean today, reminding us of their giant July 4th celebration, taking place here in Freeport, on July 4 and continuing on July 5.

This is a great event every year, from the morning parade put on by the town of Freeport (we all gather on the front lawn, as it goes right past the front of Brewster House), to the sidewalk sales and other events, free concerts at L.L. Bean (Patty Loveless is on Saturday night, July 4), followed by a huge (and we do mean huge) fireworks show. It is a fun time for all!

That brings to mind several other events that are coming up in the area. The first concert in L.L. Bean’s 2009 Summer Concert Series (all concerts are free) is this weekend as Madeiline Peyroux appears in L.L. Bean’s Discovery Park in Freeport. The concerts continue every Saturday night through Labor Day.

Meanwhile, the highly acclaimed Maine State Music Theatre is presenting “Crazy for You” through July 11, followed by “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” which begins July 15.

Dan Zanes and Friends appear in the L.L. Bean Summer Concert Series on July 11, Matt Dusk on July 18, and Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile on July 25.

Meanwhile, Brewster House and the other Historic Freeport Bed and Breakfasts‘ monthly Open House is from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on July 17.
