We’re still here; Holidays in Freeport; Great Gift for 2021

November 19, 2020 by Kelleigh Dulany

This year the arrival of the holidays feels like a mix of joy, angst and sorrow.  The COVID pandemic is still here, something we would have never predicted back in March.   Sadly, it hangs on and showing little signs of a turn around especially heading into the winter months.   Our hearts go out to those that have suffered physically or lost a love one from this horrible disease.  Thankfully our family has remained healthy;  for that we are going to rejoice in the spirit of the holidays.  Yes, Dave has already started his turkey brine & delicious gravy for Thanksgiving,  Yes, I’ve started the somewhat daunting task of decorating the Inn.  And Yes, the kids have already asking after Elf on the Shelf and if Santa has to follow any travel restrictions and ‘have to quarantine?”  So YES! We’re still here!

It’s True! Spring is on its way!

February 26, 2013 by Kelleigh Dulany

Following on the heels of the whimsically-named nor’easter called Nemo, we had another storm about a week ago, and more snow just this past weekend. With more snow predicted tomorrow (Wednesday), you might find it hard to believe that we can see signs that Spring is on its way – but it is!

Despite the sudden flurry of snowstorms (sorry – couldn’t resist!), temperatures have been well above freezing in between, so each snow has nearly disappeared before the next one arrived. Even with snow in the current forecast, the temperatures are above freezing, so we don’t expect it to be around long!

And then, there is the true sign of Spring – March 1 marks the beginning of our annual Spring Serenity special at Brewster House Bed & Breakfast in Freeport Maine! This annual special has become extremely popular with our guests over the past several years.

Not only is the weather starting to improve (though there can often be nice conditions for a bit of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, etc. – and L.L. Bean’s courses to teach these and other skills continue into March) but the Freeport’s outlets and shops are clearing out their old merchandise to make way for the new – and that means SALES!

Check out our availability calendar, and book your visit to get 3 nights for the price of 2, March 1 – May 8, 2013! All the Brewster House goodness, with an extra day free! Any room, any day, but subject to availability.

Freeport’s Outlets and Shops – Something for Everyone!

May 1, 2012 by Kelleigh Dulany

Many people are aware that Freeport Maine is the home of outdoor retail giant L.L. Bean, and still others are aware that Freeport can be said to have been something of a town filled with shops and outlets. However, neither of these statements adequately conveys what a delightful and special place Freeport is. For those of us who live in Freeport, it is easy to forget that so many people (even throughout the New England region, let alone the rest of the USA or worldwide) have never heard of Freeport or L.L. Bean.

Because of that, instead of writing, as we often do, about things to do in or near Freeport other than shopping (including our recent article for the Maine Innkeepers Association blog), this time we wanted to provide more information on the five L.L. Bean stores, and the other shops and outlets in Freeport.

Following Freeport’s time as a shipbuilding town, it became a shoe manufacturing town. Later, young Leon Leonwood Bean started a mail-order catalog featuring his Maine hunting shoe. That small family business has grown into a huge enterprise, with 5 stores in Freeport (four of which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week – only the L.L. Bean Outlet closes at night and on Christmas Day). Eventually, Freeport reinvented itself as an outlet town (before America had outlet malls in almost every city). As outlet malls became more common, Freeport changed again, into an unusual mix of outlets and retail, with many local Maine-owned stores, interesting retail shops.

In addition to the five L.L. Bean stores (the flagship store, the Hunting and Fishing Store, the Home Store, the Bike, Boat and Ski Store, and the L.L. Bean Outlet), Freeport is home to many other shops and restaurants. In fact, it feels a bit like living in a huge, outdoor, shopping mall. Many of the shops are members of Freeport USA, Freeport’s marketing organization, and therefore are included on the Freeport USA map. Many others, however, are not included on the map, yet do a thriving business in Freeport.

According to Freeport USA there are well over 140 shops and restaurants in Freeport. They range from L.L. Bean’s five stores to small shops like Isabella’s Sticky Buns. There are well-known clothing and shoe stores, like Talbots, Jones of New York, Banana Republic, Polo, and J. Crew, Clark, Bass, Nike and 9 West. There are specialty shops like Georgetown Pottery, Cuddledown, Freeport Knife & Kitchenware, The Mangy Moose, and Cool As A Moose. You’ll find fine jewelry, like R.D. Allen or Brown Goldsmiths, and crafts such as the Beadin Path. From the Pet Pantry to the Coach Factory Store, there is something in Freeport for every member of the household.

Let’s not forget the many restaurant, specialty food and candy shops, and more. There’s Wilbur’s of Maine for local chocolate, When Pigs Fly bakery, and Wicked Whoopies for a whoopie pie. There is coffee and tea from Starbucks to Coffee By Design to Jacqueline’s Tea Room, serving a formal tea, as well as selling teas. Restaurants include Azure Cafe, Jameson Tavern, the Broad Arrow Tavern, the Maine Dining Room, the Mediterranean Grill, and more. You’ll find lighter fare at Corsican, or just stop in for a cup of chowder at the Freeport Chowder House or Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen and Topside Tavern.

These are just a few of the wonderful shops and restaurants you’ll find when you visit Freeport. Don’t just allow a couple of hours to walk through the shops. First time visitors often tell us they had no idea there was so much here! Plan at least a day, just to walk through all the stores.

Where Do All the Guests Go After Breakfast?

Brewster House Bed & Breakfast, Freeport, Maine

Most people who visit our Freeport Maine Bed & Breakfast arrive planning to spend a bit of time shopping at the Freeport outlets and shops, or sightseeing along the Maine coast. However, as happens a few times each year, the other morning found a couple at breakfast who had no idea there was shopping in Freeport, had never heard of L.L. Bean, and didn’t know where all the other guests were going after breakfast!

Where are all the guests going?

Shopping

About 2 out of every 5 guests walking from Brewster House to the Freeport shops and outlets, which begin just about a block from our door. FreeportUSA says there are over 200 shops and restaurants in Freeport, but that number belies the charm of the historic buildings along Main Street.

In addition to L.L. Bean’s campus, which includes four of its stores (all four of these are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week), most of the shops and restaurants are located in historic buildings, dating to the late 1800’s. Even the McDonalds in Freeport is in a house that dates back before 1870. In the midst of all this is Freeport Village Station, which is a modern collection of shops and eateries, built to blend in with the historic buildings around it, and which included the L.L. Bean Outlet, which is the only L.L. Bean store that closes.

Sightseeing

Most of the rest of our guests leave quickly after breakfast to cover as much ground as possible, as they have planned sightseeing trips for the day that will take them to as many as eight lighthouses, at least three beaches, hiking in one of at least five state parks, or even all the way to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park (now that is really a full day of sightseeing!). Our lighthouse map can help you find your way to the Maine lighthouses.

Lobster

Red’s Eats, Wiscasset

Some of our guests just can’t get enough lobster while they’re in Maine (imagine that)!

In addition to Freeport’s own lobster shack on the South Freeport dock, Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster, they will drive south to Kennebunkport to try the Clam Shack (reknowned for its lobster rolls), or north to Wiscasset to sample the rolls at Red’s Eats. Still others will visit Five Islands Lobster Shack, or head for Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, followed by a side trip to Shaws Lobster in New Harbor, or Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse and Two Lights Lobster Shack. Of course, we have a map of Maine lobster shacks, too.

Whatever your interest (and tastes), nearly all our first-time visitors (and more than a few of our returning guests) find that there is more to do than they can possibly fit into just a couple of days. They leave anxious to plan their next visit to Freeport, Maine!
