We’re still here; Holidays in Freeport; Great Gift for 2021

November 19, 2020 by Kelleigh Dulany

This year the arrival of the holidays feels like a mix of joy, angst and sorrow.  The COVID pandemic is still here, something we would have never predicted back in March.   Sadly, it hangs on and showing little signs of a turn around especially heading into the winter months.   Our hearts go out to those that have suffered physically or lost a love one from this horrible disease.  Thankfully our family has remained healthy;  for that we are going to rejoice in the spirit of the holidays.  Yes, Dave has already started his turkey brine & delicious gravy for Thanksgiving,  Yes, I’ve started the somewhat daunting task of decorating the Inn.  And Yes, the kids have already asking after Elf on the Shelf and if Santa has to follow any travel restrictions and ‘have to quarantine?”  So YES! We’re still here!

Do You Sparkle? Will You Sparkle in Freeport?

October 25, 2011 by Kelleigh Dulany

Sparkle? What is Sparkle? More specifically, what is Sparkle in Freeport and why would I want to do it?

Sparkle weekend in Freeport, Maine is traditionally the first weekend in December each year, and marks the kickoff of the Christmas season with a Parade of Lights, Talking Chrismas Tree, Tuba Concert, and many other favorites. This year it is December 2-3, 2011, with the Jingle Bell Run taking place on Main Street on December 4.

Sparkle follows close on the heels of our Moonlight Madness even on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 25, where you can shop in Freeport’s outlets in the wee hours of the morning.

All of this activity takes place throughout Freeport Village, while L.L. Bean is simultaneously hosting their Northern Lights Celebration so there is plenty to do for the entire family.

There’s a lot going on in Freeport in the coming weeks! Be sure to check our availability calendar to see when you would like to book your room!

That was fast! Final foliage report for Maine…

October 19, 2011 by Kelleigh Dulany

fall-foliage-2011-2It seems like only a few short weeks ago that we were excitedly posting the first foliage report for Maine for 2011.

Oh, wait. It was only a few short weeks ago! Where did the leaves time  go?

Just last week we were driving along I-295, admiring the beautiful fall foliage, and thinking it would be just another week and the colors would be at their peak. But in the blink of an eye (OK, in just a few days) it has all passed, and we’re now past peak in virtually the entire state.

Of course, there are still isolated spots with nice color, but the sense that everywhere you turn is filled with beautiful color is already gone. Sigh.

Hence, we are moving on, and posted about the less well-known November activities in Freeport earlier this week.

And, moving on from there, we will be posting more in coming weeks about Freeport’s annual Sparkle Weekend, with its parades, sales, Christmas lights, and more, followed by all the holiday activities and the giant L.L. Bean New Years Celebration (don’t forget, 2012 is a leap year!).

Morning Glorious – the last fling of autumn

October 30, 2010 by Kelleigh Dulany

Every year our red maple across the driveway is the last to turn colors (it began only a couple of days ago), and one of the last to drop its leaves (should be good for another week or so, depending on wind, rain, etc.).

This morning, with the early morning sun coming up on it, the leaves seemed to glow a deep red and orange. What a beauty that tree is!

It is always with a tinge of sadness that we see it turn colors, however, as that is also the sure sign that autumn is nearly over, and winter will soon be here. Of course, the prospect of winter brings its own pleasures!

First, we have Sparkle Weekend, the first weekend in December, with parade, festival, L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights, and more! Then there is all of the traditional Christmas shopping and events, followed by New Year’s Eve and the huge celebration to ring in the new year. And then we start all over again, with January and snow and all that can be done with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more!

All that, from one little tree!

Don’t Miss These Winter Festivals!

December 1, 2009 by Kelleigh Dulany

Our friends at Wicked Good Travel Tips posted an article yesterday (November 30) called “New England Holiday Festivals Too Good To Miss.

While we know they can’t post every festival, with all due respect we think they missed a couple of good ones!

Sparkle Weekend, Freeport, MaineFirst, and earliest, is Sparkle Weekend in Freeport, Maine. This coming weekend (December 4-6, 2009) this annual festival kicks off the Christmas season in Freeport with a 6 p.m. parade, talking Christmas tree, an open house at the Historic Freeport Bed and Breakfasts, historic vignettes at the Freeport Historical Society, book signings, craft fairs, carriage rides, a tuba concert, art auction, theatre, and more! Throughout the Sparkle Weekend, and continuing until New Year’s Eve, is the L.L. Bean Northern Lights Celebration.

This is the 16th annual Sparkle Weekend, and it is always a huge favorite with locals and visitors, alike. Guests at the bed and breakfasts often book their visits for Sparkle a year in advance, to be certain of getting their favorite rooms. They return year after year for the parade, the shopping, the open houses at the B&Bs, the shopping, the tuba concert… and did we mention the shopping?

Flavors of Freeport
The other “Can’t miss” festival, not mentioned in the article (and admittedly not part of the Thanksgiving-Hanukkah-Christmas-New Years holiday season), is Flavors of Freeport. In its first two years, Flavors has grown in popularity, becoming a real “taste of Maine” type of event. There are chefs from throughout the area, showcasing their style and favorite dishes, wine pairings, desserts, beer tastings, and more.

With a new date this year (April 9-11; previously this has been a February event), the weather is likely to be more moderate, so getting from one event to another should be much more pleasant. This year’s offerings will also include a block party at Freeport Village Station, with participation from the merchants there.

So, whether in December for Sparkle Weekend and the L.L. Bean Northern Lights Celebration, or April, for Flavors of Freeport, find your way here for the festivals (and the shopping isn’t bad, either!).

Thirty Shopping Days ’til …

November 17, 2009 by Kelleigh Dulany

Brewster House at ChristmasFor most Americans the thirty days (or thereabouts) between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are the days we are subjected to constant advertising for holiday gifts and the countdown of the number of shopping days until Christmas.

As an aside – for those too young to recall – we used to count shopping days instead of simply the number of days remaining because most stores were not open 7 days a week. Hence the number of shopping days was less than the number of days by an amount equal to the number of Sundays in that time frame.

Since those familiar with Freeport already know what a shopping Mecca it is, it will come as no surprise that there is a lot going on in town during those 30 days!

Shop, Dine & Stay
Throughout most of that time (Now through December 19, 2009) Brewster House Bed & Breakfast is offering its Shop, Dine & Stay package, with two nights double-occupancy in a queen room, an L.L. Bean gift card, a gift certificate at Azure Cafe, for only $499 (taxes included), and the ability to add a third night for only $100.

Moonlight Madness
In addition, Freeport’s Moonlight Madness event begins in the wee hours of Friday morning, November 27, with many stores open, special events, sales, etc. This is traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, and only Freeport can do it all up with L.L. Bean’s stores, and other shops and restaurants.

A week later is Sparkle weekend in Freeport. An entire weekend of holiday fun for the whole family! The weekend begins with a parade of lights down beautiful Main St., decorated to look like a scene from a Christmas card. The celebration will include a tuba concert, jingle bell run, craft fair, hot cocoa stops, talking Christmas tree, Wally the Green Monster, and of course… SANTA!!!

Northern Lights Celebration
From November 20 through New Years Eve is L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights Celebration. It begins with the lighting of the giant Christmas tree, and includes book signings, demonstrations, ice carving and special events, leading up to a huge New Years celebration for the entire family.

Shopping, Shopping, Shopping
Freeport’s over 170 shops and restaurants will be open with values galore, throughout the holiday time, and with the new stores in Freeport Village Station adding to the mix, there is truly something for everyone on your Christmas shopping list.

Of course, if you’re not busy shopping for holiday gifts, and can wait… there are the after-Christmas sales. Like most places there are sales in Freeport after Christmas. However, after New Years there are even more, and then in late January and February, still more!! But that’s a closely guarded secret, so we better not say too much about that!

After the Foliage in Freeport

October 27, 2009 by Kelleigh Dulany

While there is still good color in places (our back yard being a prime example), many of the trees have lost most of their leaves. As you drive US-1 or I-295 either north or south, there are still some pockets of trees with spectacular colors, many have faded and the leaf drop is significant (helped along, no doubt, by a wind and rain storm a few days ago).

So, now what?

Things don’t stand still in Freeport, Maine.

The State of Maine Tourism Office is kicking off a program called “Shop, Dine and Stay”, promoting various activities leading up to the holiday season. We have created a “Shop, Dine and Stay” special for that purpose. The program highlights the late-fall and early-winter activities and the pre-holiday shopping opportunities in Maine (and especially in Freeport!).

Shopping Opportunity is Knocking!

As thoughts turn to the holidays, the November weather provides nice opportunities for some low-key sightseeing along the nearby coast, as well as early Christmas shopping in Freeport’s nearly 200 shops and restaurants (including, of course, L.L. Bean’s 5 stores – four of which are open 24×7!).

Yesterday we took a walk through town, stopping in many of the shops, both those along Main street in the historic buildings, and also in the new (in 2009) Freeport Village Station. We found plenty of bargains already available.

Many shops are advertising sales from 25-50% off, and we saw some that were as much as 70% off! In addition, there were some one day only sales with markdowns as high as 50-75% off, and some buy one – get one (BOGO) (or even buy one, get two) sales.

All of this is just in time for the Freeport Girlfriends Getaway weekend, November 13-15.

A Thanksgiving Getaway?

Over the Thanksgiving holidays (November 26-29 in the United States) there are some great opportunities. As usual, the Maine Dining Room at the Harraseeket Inn is having its all-you-can-eat buffet Thanksgiving Dinner (reservations required). Also, a number of the Freeport merchants will participate in the Moonlight Madness event again this year, with doors opening at (or after) midnight, in the wee hours of Friday morning, November 27.

Do You Sparkle?

Thanksgiving weekend also kicks of the traditional Christmas shopping season and the lighting decorations and Christmas trees will all be out for Sparkle Weekend, December 4-6. Activities include a parade of lights down beautiful Main St., decorated to look like a scene from a Christmas card, a tuba concert, jingle bell run, craft fair, hot cocoa stops, talking Christmas tree, and of course… Santa!

Get ready for the holiday season! Come to Freeport, Maine and Shop, Dine and Stay!

Sparkle With Us In Freeport, December 2009

September 15, 2009 by Kelleigh Dulany

Brewster House B&B with Christmas lightsIt seems too early in the year to be thinking about Christmas, but we’re well into September, and for those making plans for early December, it is already time to begin thinking about Freeport’s 16th annual Sparkle Weekend.

This year Sparkle is December 4, 5 and 6. Typically the weekend includes L.L. Bean’s Northern Lights celebration nightly (from November 20 – January 1), horsedrawn wagon rides, hot cocoa, an open house and tour of Freeport’s historic bed and breakfast inns, a talking Christmas tree, a parade (with Santa arriving in a lobster boat!), visits with Santa, Freeport Community Players’ Old Time Radio Show, a Jingle Bell fun run, a craft fair, a tuba concert, and more!

In 2008 L.L. Bean displayed the largest Christmas tree east of the Mississippi River, lit with energy-efficient LED lights, and provided entertaining ice carving demonstrations, as well as other instruction and demonstrations around the tree.

All this is in addition to the nearly 200 shops and restaurants in Freeport, a number of which will be offering special bargains and packages for the occasion.

Many guests book rooms for Sparkle Weekend for the next year as they depart from the previous year, so rooms can be in short supply. Be sure to plan early, to be sure your room is available.
